The Z is a pin-tumbler lock made by GOAL. It contains 7 pins and 2 core-centering ball bearings. This lock features overmilling in the plug, and security drivers which are a mix of thin and thick lipped gin spools.

Principles of Operation

The GOAL Z functions as a standard pin-tumbler lock with 7 pins. To open the lock, all pin-tumblers must be aligned at the shear line. GOAL utilizes a variety of security drivers to deter picking, with the Z using a mix of thin and thick lipped spool drivers. Additionally, the plug features overmilling to catch pins as they are lifted to shear. Key pins are torpedo shaped to create overset traps. GOAL Z has 8 different cut depths for pins, with 7 and 8 cuts on the key having standard drivers rather than spools. Unlike many high security locks, GOAL prints a code on the key that directly shows both the keyway type and the cut depths for all pins.

Disassembly Instructions

The Z is disassembled in the same way as a traditional pin-tumbler cylinder. Some care should be used when removing the plug as the biasing bearings are spring loaded and will launch out if they are not covered. The bearings are on either side of the plug and slight back from the face. Thier position is indicated on the kik cylinder by 2 small holes.

Shimming is recommended while gutting a GOAL Z. The plug typically has divots for construction keying, but they are small enough that the drivers will not enter them. There is a possibility, however, that one of the biasing bearings could be pushed into the bible and lodge partway in the chamber, preventing the plug from further movement.

  1. Remove the cam or C-clip.
  2. Insert the key and turn the plug 45-90 degrees.
  3. Withdraw the plug from the cylinder. (A plug follower is recommended)

OR

  1. Remove the chamber casings and take out each pin-stack individually
  2. Remove the cam or C-clip.
  3. Withdraw the plug from the cylinder.

Vulnerabilities
