Linus Yale, Jr. was born in Salisbury, New York. Yale Jr joined his father, Linus Yale, Sr., at his lock business in 1850. He introduced some combination safe and key-operated cylinder locks around 1862. His 1865 patent (48,475) for a pin-tumbler lock and key was a drastic improvment over previous models, and is the basis for pin-tumbler locks since. In 1868, he and Henry Robinson Towne founded the Yale Lock Manufacturing Company in Stamford, Connecticut to produce cylinder locks. Yale Jr. died later that year due to heart failure.
