The Galaxy is a multi-sidebar lock made by Australian Lock Company. Arranged axially, the Galaxy uses a number of spring-biased pins that interface with independent sidebars and a central core. The core itself can be rotated to provided extended master keying, core removal, and rapid disassembly. Galaxy key patents are valid until 2024.
Lock Options
A weatherproof cover is available for the 1200 and 1300 (but not the 1100) padlocks. Other options, such as a sash chain, bump-stop cylinder, brass shackle (for high corrosion or spark sensitive environments), laser engraving and alternate cylinders are also available by special order from the manufacturer.

Bypass Restriction Plate
In newer American Lock padlocks, a bypass restriction plate has been added which prevents the manipulation of the actuator cam with a special tool through the keyway. The plate takes the form of a circular metal disc with a half-moon cutout in it that fits over the actuator. When servicing older padlocks that do not have this plate, it is advisable to install them to address this simple but serious security vulnerability.

Disassembly instructions
Unlock the padlock and swivel the shackle out of the way, revealing the cylinder retaining screw. Remove this screw, which will release the trap plate at the bottom of the lock and permit the cylinder to be removed.

To further disassemble the padlock: with the retaining screw, trap plate, retaining nut and cylinder removed; carefully lock the padlock while keeping the shackle depressed. Unless the lock is dirty inside, this will generally cause the actuator and ball bearings to drop out the bottom of the lock. If they don't drop out immediately, gently tap the lock against a hard surface to dislodge the parts. Then, remove the shackle and shackle spring.

Reassembly instructions
Reassembly is done in reverse order: After cleaning the disassembled padlock, insert the shackle spring and shackle. Invert the padlock while holding the shackle in place, and insert the locking balls with some grease, followed by the actuator. Next install the anti-bypass plate (optional), the cylinder, trap door and nut. Before installing the retaining screw, test the padlock by holding the trap door and nut in place (the nut is necessary to allow proper cylinder operation) by locking and unlocking the padlock several times. When you are confident the lock is operating correctly, install the retaining screw.

Cylinder compatible locks
Other American padlocks that utilize the same cylinders (APTC12 or APTC14) include:

* Model 20
* Model 30
* 5100
* 5200
* 5400
* 700

Additionally, the ABUS 34/55 and 34CS/55 as well as the ABUS 72 series padlocks also accept these cylinders.

The 83 series is a versatile assortment of pin-tumbler padlocks made by ABUS. They are designed for medium to high security applications and most are not only keyway-compatible with most major manufacturers, but also accept cylinders from Schlage, Sargent, Lori, Medeco and others (for example, Abloy and Bilock). IC versions of the 83-series locks are also available, accepting SFIC and LFIC Schlage interchangable cores. Recently, versions of the 83-series padlocks (with the exception of the 83/80) are available to support the new ABUS E60 Euro Cylinders. The 83 series is also somewhat famous for including one of the largest commercially produced padlocks, "The Rock" 83/80 which is 3 1/4 in (82.5mm) wide and features a 9/16 (15mm) shackle. The 83/80 padlock uses a Scandinavian Oval cylinder, which is not supplied with the lock.

ABUS recently released the S2 (series 2) version of these padlocks, which can be identified by the updated logo on the lock body. Series 2 versions feature updated components; one of the most notable changes is the new "3 in 1" bolt driver which eliminates the need to manually rewind the spring on the bolt driver if it is removed from the body.

Features
These locks feature a component called the Z-bar that allows the lock to be quickly converted between key-retaining and non key-retaining by the user. With the release of the series 2 locks, the shape of this component has changed and they are not compatible. The two versions can be identified by their different shapes and the colour of the dot (series 1 is red, series 2 is black).

The new S2 series locks also feature ABUS's patented NanoProtect Chrome coating, which they claim makes the locks impervious to rust.
Vulnerabilities
Depending on the cylinder used, the 83 series locks may be vulnerable to the following attacks:

* Lockpicking
* Key bumping
* Decoding
* Bypass

Disassembly
# Unlock the padlock.
# Remove the retaining screw that was concealed by the shackle to free the cylinder.
# Close the shackle and gently tap the body on a hard surface to release the bolt driver, spring and ball bearings.
# Remove the shackle which will expose the shackle spring.

Replacing the shackle
* Method 1

Unlock the padlock and remove the cylinder. With a broad flat-headed screwdriver, rotate the bolt driver 45 degrees clockwise while gently pulling on the old shackle to release it. Press new shackle into position and release bolt driver.

* Method 2

With the shackle in the closed position, lightly tap the padlock on a hard surface to extract the bolt driver and locking balls from the lock body. The shackle can be removed and replaced. Re-insert the locking balls with a little bit of grease, followed by the bolt driver - be sure the pigtail on the driver aligns with the correct groove. If this is done on series 1 locks, you will also need to rewind the spring which is difficult without the correct tool supplied by Abus.
The 83 series is a versatile assortment of pin-tumbler padlocks made by ABUS. They are designed for medium to high security applications and are not only keyway-compatible with most major manufacturers, but also accept cylinders from Schlage, Sargent, Lori, Medeco and others (for example, Abloy and Bilock). IC versions of the 83-series locks are also available, accepting SFIC and LFIC Schlage interchangable cores. The 83 series is also somewhat famous for including one of the largest commercially produced padlocks, "The Rock" 83/80 which is 3 1/4 in (82.5mm) wide and features a 9/16 (14mm) shackle.

* Lockpicking
* Decoding
* Bypass

* Method 1

Unlock the padlock and remove the cylinder. With a broad flat-headed screwdriver, rotate the bolt driver 45 degrees clockwise while gently pulling on the old shackle to release it. Press new shackle into position and release bolt driver.

* Method 2

The American Lock 1100, 1200 and 1300 series are rekeyable powder-coated Aluminum body pin-tumbler padlocks that are available in a number of colors. Due to their low cost, durability, attractive appearance and general availabilty, these padlocks are very common and are probably the most popular of all American padlocks. Because of they are made out of Aluminum, they are sometimes used in environments such as magazines where a spark-resistant material is required, and as such are a popular choice as lockout padlocks.

I'm Lockr, based on the west coast of Canada. My background is in electronics, programming, systems administration, computer networking and computer security.

I'm interested in locks and locking mechanisms, particularly padlocks; and am particularly interested in disassembling locks, learning how they work, and not only identifying their security weaknesses; but also speculating on how these weaknesses could be resolved and the security of those locks improved. As a result of this, I have assembled a fairly nice collection of locks and I hope to use some of this collection to contribute to LockWiki.

__TOC__

<br clear=all>

Vulnerabilities
Depending on the cylinder used, the 83 series locks may be vulnerable to the following attacks:

* Lockpicking
* Key bumping
* Decoding
* Bypass

* Method 1

Unlock the padlock and remove the cylinder. With a broad flat-headed screwdriver, rotate the bolt driver 45 degrees clockwise while gently pulling on the old shackle to release it. Press new shackle into position and release bolt driver.

* Method 2
